About Facelifts
A rhytidectomy, which is also known as a facelift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is used to improve the appearance of one’s facial features. The aging process brings many noticeable changes to one’s face, including deep creases, loose skin, and loss of muscle tone.
Other surgeries can be done in conjunction with rhytidectomy, such as brow lifts, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty, to achieve dramatic results.
What to Expect
Facelifts begin with anesthesia. The surgeon will then make the incisions that are necessary for the procedure. These are typically made along the hairline, starting from the patient’s temples and curving around the ear. Other incisions can extend to the lower back of the neck to complete the traditional rhytidectomy.
Surgeons generally trim or suction excess fat from the inside of the incision, which will help contour the skin. Muscle tissue is then tightened, and the skin is pulled back. Sutures seal the incision.
However, it must be noted that each surgeon conducts a facelift differently. The specific methods and order of procedures is up to your physician. Of course, each patient is different, so the operation will vary depending on the patient’s facial features.
A facelift is a long, meticulous process and may take up to several hours. Once the procedure is complete, your doctor may wrap your face in gauze, carefully draining any excess blood to minimize bruising and swelling.
Recovering from Surgery
The recovery process for rhytidectomy depends on the individual patient. Initially, your face will appear swollen and bruised; however, these side effects will subside in a few weeks. If numbness occurs, you will regain feeling in your face within a few weeks.
Typically, no major pain or discomfort results after this surgery, but pain medication can be prescribed to alleviate any adverse side effects. However, if you do experience intensive pain, you should contact your physician.
Any drainage tubes or bandages will be removed within a few days after the procedure, while sutures are taken out after 5 days or longer.
