Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery today… for good reason–the satisfaction rate is tremendously high.
Most women that come into my office interested in Orange County breast augmentation, also known as a mammoplasty, have thought about it for quite some time. My ultimate objective with each patient is to fully educate them about all of the options and have them very clearly communicate to me their aesthetic goals.
My best advice to any prospective patient is to make sure that you feel comfortable with the plastic surgeon that will be treating you. They should fully explain to you, without rushing or compromising, every aspect of the procedure. Their attention to detail should be obvious. Do not ever feel that you are rushed into making a decision–if the surgeon makes sense to you and their work demonstrates skill, you will do wonderfully. What to Expect
The entire mammaplasty procedure can take up to two hours, and the implant is placed in a way that centers it to the nipple. Whether this is placed below or above the muscle is dependent on the individual. Similarly, the patient’s preference and their anatomy will determine the location and types of incisions. Your doctor will discuss the type and size of implant desired, as well as each of their advantages. After which, the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia.
For increasing the fullness and size of the breasts, surgeons recommend a breast augmentation. Women who are good candidates for this procedure tend to have unevenly shaped or sized breasts, breasts that have begun to sag since childbirth or are disproportionately small. There may be cases in which a woman’s breasts may be too droopy, leading to a need for a lift instead of or in addition to an augmentation.
Many aspects of the mammoplasty procedure are customized for each patient depending on her body, breast type, and needs. This includes where the incisions are placed, breast size, implant type, the shape of the implant, and whether it is placed over or under the muscle.
Recovering from Surgery
It is important to take in fluids as you rest in bed. It is extremely important to avoid aggravating any of the surgical areas. During the first week, a bra will be fitted, which will allow you to shower. This may even occur two or three days after the operation. It is normal for the breasts to sit a bit higher than they usually do, and they will fall to a more natural position within three to six weeks. You will also likely feel sore in your chest area for the first few days, though this should also fade quickly. You should feel comfortable after the first week.
To enhance the results of a breast augmentation, Orange County residents sometimes combine it with a breast lift, tummy tuck, and/or liposuction.
Before & After
Our Client Stories
Breast Implant Sizing
Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. Each procedure, however, differs depending on the individual receiving implants. At Newport Beach Plastic Surgery, we’ll take the time to select the right implant size for you.
While the science of breast augmentation has been standardized, the location of the incisions, the style, size, and shape of the implants are fully customized for each patient depending on their body size and unique wishes. Though most women come to our offices have made up their minds about getting implants, most need help deciding what size implants they want.
With tabloid news being a dominant factor in our culture, many women have the notion that “bigger is better.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Despite its commonality, breast augmentations are life-altering procedures. Dr. Ambe takes the necessary time to meet with each patient and make sure they are headed in the right direction.
When you come into our office, we’ll take precise measurements of your breasts, looking for any inconsistencies or asymmetry. We’ll ask you how large you want your breasts to be and determine the reasoning behind your decision. You will be supplied with pictures of women who have undergone a similar procedure to see if you like the results. Because every size implant carries different attendant issues, we’ll explain the changes in lifestyle you’re likely to experience after your surgery is completed. Our ultimate goal is to satisfy your desires.
Even if you are looking to alter the size and shape of your breasts, breast enlargement may not be the procedure for you. Dr. Ambe will keep all options on the table, including a breast lift, which is less invasive and can make many of the same alterations as a breast augmentation. Our staff will fully explain the advantages and disadvantages of each cup size, the economic investment any augmentation requires, and the estimated recovery time.

You can gain valuable insight during your consultation by talking with your Newport Beach breast augmentation surgeon, but there is also a wide array of information that you can research beforehand. This includes the type of implant, method of incision and insertion, placement of the implant, and the shape and size of the implant. Because each patient’s body is different, consideration of each patient’s proportions will give optimal results.
First, you should consider the type of implant: saline or silicone. Both types are FDA-approved, but saline implants are a more popular choice. They enable the plastic surgeon to create a shorter scar and pose fewer complications from leaks and ruptures. Silicone has some advantages, notably resulting in less rippling or visible edges, and are lighter while feeling more natural. However, they are more likely to result in capsular contracture and require a larger incision.
Next, through consultation, you should choose which type of incision is appropriate to insert the implant: areola or inframammary. An areola incision requires a small cut beneath the nipple. An inframammary incision is made underneath the breast where it meets the chest. Your choice of incision depends on the type of implant you choose, and some offer less visible scarring than others.
Finally, you must choose where precisely to have your implants placed. Sub-glandular placement is above the pectoral muscle but below the mammary gland. Sub-pectoral placement is beneath the pectoralis major muscle. Sub-muscular placement takes sub-pectoral placement a bit further by placing the implant beneath other chest muscles by the lower portion of the implant.
