About Liposuction
I honestly feel that liposuction is a truly fabulous procedure, especially for those who are in generally good shape, but have a few ‘problem’ areas.
It always amazes me how well patients do postoperatively. Many of my patients for liposuction in Newport Beach express to me that they are concerned they will have a long recuperation period. That simply should not be the case.
If performed in a safe, fully accredited surgery center, and the surgeon uses what I refer to as an “atraumatic dual plane technique of fat removal,” the patient should see dramatic results very quickly and, at the same time, be pleasantly surprised at how smooth the recovery should be.
Even though lipoplasty helps remove fat from the body, it is not a solution or treatment for obesity. Traditional diet and exercise must also accompany this procedure for long-term results. However, liposuction can help get rid of those stubborn places where fat accumulates. By embracing patients can remove fatty tissue from their stomachs, legs, buttocks, face, and arms.
What to Expect
The procedures for lipo have evolved over the years, and doctors can give more personalized operations, better results, and quicker recoveries with the use of ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty and the tumescent technique. Liposuction is often performed along with procedures like the mommy makeover.
Lipo patients undergo an operation where small tubes, or cannulas, vacuum the fatty tissues from the body parts. After lipo, patients always need to be monitored right after the surgery because a lot of fluid is lost during the process of liposuction. This fluid needs to be replaced inside the body to avoid a shock.
Recovering from Surgery
After surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. Occasionally, a small drainage tube may be inserted beneath the skin for a couple of days to prevent fluid build-up. To control swelling and to help your skin better fit its new contours, you may be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
Don’t expect to look or feel great right after surgery. Even though the newer techniques are believed to reduce some post-operative discomforts, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon, though you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days.
It is normal to feel a bit anxious or depressed in the days or weeks following surgery. However, this feeling will subside as you begin to look and feel better.
