About Otoplasty

What to Expect

The procedure can take up to three hours, and many times, minor scarring is a result of ear surgery. Typically, both ears receive the ear pinning surgery to avoid disportionate features. With this procedure, cartilage does not have to be extracted. It is exposed and then sculpted nearer to the patient’s head, giving a natural-looking result. Stitches help keep the ear folded back. The procedure time and recovery period is similar to other facial procedure like cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Recovering from Surgery

Patients are allowed to go home after the anesthesia effects wear off, but they may also stay overnight in the hospital. Throughout the first couple of days, big bandages and light head dressings are placed on the head to mold the ears and protect them from infection. Concerning the head bandages, the doctor’s instructions should be followed to avoid any complications. Stitches are only in the ears for a week, after which they should dissolve. Even though otoplasty Newport Beach patients do not have to spend much time in the hospital for recovery, any activity that may bend the ears should be avoided for at least a month. Be sure to notify your child’s teacher about the recovery so that someone can supervise his or her activities during school hours.
