An arm lift, or tuck, is known in the medical field as brachioplasty, and it specifically targets the area above the elbow to remove excess fat and or sagging skin as well as tighten the supportive tissues for optimal results. As with all plastic surgery procedures, you must meet certain health standards to avoid dangerous risks. What to Expect
Brachioplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure and is usually done under general anesthesia. Incision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Incisions are generally placed in the inside of the arm or on the back of the arm, and may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. If fat is to be reduced during the arm lift, it will be excised or treated with liposuction. Depending on the specific conditions, incisions may be more limited. Then, underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures. Finally, the skin is smoothed over the new contour of your arm. The smoother, tighter contours that result from brachioplasty are apparent almost immediately following your procedure, although initial results will be somewhat obscured by swelling and bruising. Your new shapely and toned upper arm is dramatically improved both in appearance and feel.
Recovering from Surgery
This is typically an outpatient procedure, so recovery at home is recommended. Prescriptions for pain medication are optional, as some very healthy patients can take over-the-counter medication for any post-surgery pain they experience. During the first few days of recovery, you will see some bruising and swelling. Severity is directly related to how extensive the contouring procedure is. Minimal movement is required during this time, so it is recommended that you seek out help for everyday lifting and reaching up.
After one to two weeks, the sutures are removed. To recover fully from the procedure and to continue to maintain the results, you may need to consult a variety of specialists including your general practitioner, a dietician or nutritionist, and even a personal trainer.
