“The sun accelerates the aging process in the skin,” says Dr. Ambe. “This is why it is so important to wear sunscreen. Of course, if you didn’t wear it when you were younger, the effects are going to show up in your 30s, 40s and 50s.”
The sun’s UV rays attack the collagen fibers in the skin and cause them to break down. Collagen is an essential protein that is found throughout the body and it is the fibrous web that holds the body together. When it breaks down in the skin of the face, the skin loses its strength and elasticity causing sagging and wrinkles. No, it doesn’t happen overnight. The effects show up after years of enjoyment in the sun and trying to get that glowing California tan.
An Orange County facelift repositions the sagging skin and pulls the lower half of the face up. “I love this procedure because of the artistic aspect,” says Dr. Ambe. “The intricacies of the facelift must be respected to avoid that abnormally tight appearance. My procedure is all about achieving the most natural-looking results.”
Incisions are placed along the natural lines of the hair and ears to reduce their visibility. The skin is lifted away from the tissue and muscle. If there are pockets of fat that throw off the smooth contours, Dr. Ambe removes it.
Once the skin is repositioned, he removes the excess skin and places the sutures. Swelling and bruising occurs, but is minimal and will subside in a couple of days.
