What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is the world’s leading non-surgical fat-reduction treatment. This cutting edge technology is FDA-cleared and proven to be safe, non-invasive, and effective with over 4,000,000 treatments performed all over the world. CoolSculpting does not require anesthesia and has no downtime. Patients can immediately return to their usual activities.

How does CoolSculpting work?

The science behind CoolSculpting is based on Cryolipolysis® . When you break this word down to its, you get cryo (Greek for “icy cold, frost” ) lipo (Greek for “fat” ) and lysis (Greek for “loosening, dissolving”). You can see that Cryolipolysis® is thus a word to describe the freezing and dissolving of fat.

When a fat cell is exposed to low enough temperatures, it will freeze and slowly begin to die. Your body is designed to eliminate waste like dead cells. CoolSculpting works with your body’s natural process for eliminating waste. Over time, your body will collect the dead fat cells, your liver will process them, and excrete them through your urine.

Why choose CoolSculpting over traditional liposuction?

Before the advent of CoolSculpting, most patients looking to target specific areas of excess fat were directed toward liposuction. Traditional liposuction is much more intense and invasive than CoolSculpting. It comes with more risks, more recovery time, and it often costs more, too.

Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is usually performed under twilight or general anesthesia. A small incision is made in the skin through which a thin, hollow tube is inserted. The tube is used to manually break apart fatty deposits while suctioning them out of the body.

Traditional liposuction is not without risks, some of which can be serious or long-lasting. Aside from those associated with anesthesia, liposuction has medical risks of bruising, skin sensation changes, damage to nerves and blood vessels, infection, swelling, and fluid accumulation. Liposuction can also result in an uneven look that requires revision surgery. There is a small risk of damage to surrounding organs and muscles as well as complications associated with deep vein thrombosis and the cardiac and pulmonary systems.

Liposuction results are not immediate—residual swelling and fluid retention take weeks to resolve and show final results. During recovery from liposuction, it is vital to not put pressure, strain, or motion on the treated areas until they are fully healed.

When compared to traditional liposuction, CoolSculpting offers benefits in every category. It is non-invasive, does not require any kind of anesthesia, does not risk serious or long-lasting side effects, has no downtime or recovery period. Because CoolSculpting requires no incisions or anesthesia, it has no risk of infection, nerve or blood vessel damage, organ damage, or cardiac or pulmonary complications.

Side effects experienced during the CoolSculpting procedure may include sensations of pulling, tugging, tingling, pinching, aching, or cramping. As the cool temperatures remain, the treatment area goes numb and these sensations being to subside.

After treatment, CoolSculpting patients may experience redness, swelling, blanching (whiteness of skin), tenderness, bruising, itching, aching, or cramping. These sensations usually go away within a few days to a week or so. Treatment of the throat area for a double chin may cause a feeling of fullness in the throat.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

The CoolSculpting applicator was FDA-cleared in 2010. The technique has been thoroughly tested in the 13 top-rated medical centers across U.S. for several years, and has also been extensively used internationally. The procedure has been tested in multiple clinical trials with up to 5,500 patients. The CoolSculpting manufacturer estimates there have been over 4 million procedures performed worldwide.

Skin cells require a much lower temperature to freeze than fat, allowing the CoolSculpting to destroy fat cells without harming the skin and other surrounding tissues.

When will I see results?

Many patients see results as early as three weeks after treatment with most experiencing dramatic improvement by two months post-procedure. The results may continue to improve over four to six months as the body continues to process collapsed fat cells.

The key to CoolSculpting is its safe, gradual effect. If the fat cells all died off right away, your liver would be working over time to process the waste. While CoolSculpting will not work overnight, it is permanent and safe with minimal risks and no downtime.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Ambe may recommend a course of multiple CoolSculpting treatments, particularly if you have more than one area you wish to address.

What is the CoolSculpting procedure like?

When you arrive for your CoolSculpting treatment, your desired areas of treatment are outlined on your body with a marker. A cool gel pad is placed over this marked area to protect the skin during the procedure. Then the CoolSculpting applicator is placed over the gel pad and the cooling process begins. Many patients choose to read, work, or watch television during the treatment, which typically lasts about 30 minutes.

After the CoolSculpting applicator is removed, the treated area is massaged to help warm the underlying tissue and enhance the breakdown of the fat cells.

Are the results permanent?

Yes, the fat cells that are crystallized during CoolSculpting are permanently and naturally eliminated from your body. However, if you gain weight in the future, new fat cells may be created in the treated area or in other areas of the body. You can maintain your results with sensible diet and exercise.

Where can CoolSculpting be used?

CoolSculpting can be used on the abdomen (stomach), thigh, flank (side), back, and underneath the buttocks. It can also be used to treat the submental (neck) area.

Common areas of concern that the CoolSculpting procedure can treat are colloquially known as double chin, banana rolls, bra fat, love handles, batwings, and saddlebags. Male gynocomastia (enlarged male breasts) may also be treated in some cases.

Am I a candidate for Coolsculpting?

CoolSculpting is safe for nearly everyone. Patients who suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria may be recommended alternative treatment options.

CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution and is therefore recommended for patients who are obese. The procedure is designed to target specific areas with fatty bulges, not all-over weight loss. Generally speaking, patients should have a BMI under 30 for CoolSculpting to have its intended effect.
